Management Side of Software Engineering -
April Software Leadership Roundtable
Date: Tuesday, April 17, 2018
Time: 5:00pm to 6:30pm
Most of us agree that managers are important -- both research and folklore tell us that good managers fuel successful teams and organizations, and bad managers have detrimental impact. Software engineers often have a cynical view of managers and declare that classic management theories and prescriptions do not apply to them. Is that true? I will present what we learned from a recent study at Microsoft where we asked developers and managers what they think makes a great manager of software engineers.
Eirini Kalliamvakou is a postdoc fellow at the University of Victoria, and a researcher of software engineering teams. She has conducted numerous case studies on how software teams manage their work, knowledge, and culture. She focuses on how modern software companies grow, and how they combine team autonomy and organizational alignment to remain agile under rapid growth.
