The VanFP summer session is on July 5th at Unbounce!
SCHEDULE
6:30pm
TL;DR Talks
TL;DR talks are quick 5-10 minute presentations that give you a taste of a topic, spark interest, and hopefully encourage you to dig deeper! Interested in speaking? Message the organizers on Meetup :)
We welcome speaker submissions from developers of any experience level. We require that speaker topics fall within the technology realm (ie. this is not the place to pitch a business idea). Given that we are a very diverse group, we ask that you introduce any notation that you use in the talk (S-expressions, types, and so on). If you would like to speak at a future event, please send us a message or talk to us at one of the events.
7:00pm
Room 1: Hack night
Room 2: Elixir Workshop - Low Friction Elixir with Simon Zelazny
Reimplementing *NIX tools
Get you up and running with plain-vanilla Elixir. We'll ignore all the extra tooling that comes bundled with the language (mix, hex, ExUnit, etc) and just focus on cloning the simple command-line programs we all know and love. We'll re-create the essential features of the following *NIX tools: - `true` - `false` - `cat` - `grep` - ...and time permitting: `curl` We'll cover core language sytnax and semantics, and leverage the excellent Elixir documentation available online (and in Dash/Zeal).
After the workshop, you should have the confidence to write small Elixir scripts to scratch your little itches. From there, it should be easy to pick up more involved bits of the Elixir ecosystem, as you see fit.
Must bring a laptop (preferably *nix) with the following installed:
- Elixir (> 1.5.0) [https://elixir-lang.org/install.html]
- bash, true, false, cat, grep, curl
8:30pm: Pack up. Thank you everyone!
