In 2018, The WIMDI Speaker Series is inviting engaging speakers each month to give talks on topics that help women kill it at work.
Welcome to Talk 7 of 12 - Active Bystanders and Workplace Harassment
Most women have either experienced some form of harassment themselves or witnessed it in the workplace. As our panel discussion on the topic in January showed, it can be tough to know what to do when you are directly involved in the harassment. It can also be complex to know how to act when the harassment is happening to a friend or colleague, but bystanders can have an important role in promoting a safe work environment.
This talk will focus on how bystanders can impact and change the course of harassment in their workplaces. We'll cover:
- The role of bystanders in workplace harassment
- The difference between active and passive bystanders
- What you can do as a bystander to intervene in harassment
The goal of this talk is to get you thinking about what you can do to contribute to a harassment- and discrimination-free workplace.
This workshop is facilitated by Fiona H McFarlane, a Workplace Investigator and Trainer.
Fiona McFarlane heads Rubin Thomlinson's Vancouver practice, where she conducts workplace investigations into problematic workplace behavior such as harassment, bullying, workplace violence, code of conduct violations, and privacy breaches. Fiona has over ten years of legal experience on a variety of cases involving human rights, Indigenous rights and title, and contract law and estates. She has appeared in the Federal Court of Canada, the BC Supreme Court, the Pension Appeals Board, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal and more.
Fun fact: Fiona is active in the Girl Guides community and had dinner with Lady Betty Clay (the daughter of the founders of the Boy Scouts & Girl Guides, Lord and Lady Baden Powell) when she was a teenager.
Doors open at 5:30 for mingling and socializing. The official start time is 6pm, with additional networking time to follow.
Hosted by ACL Services.
Attendance Note:
This event is open to individuals of any gender identity.
