BC & Yukon Science Students Head to National Competition
Tuesday, May 5, 2015
Finalists from regional science fairs across the country meet and compete as Science Fair Foundation BC (SFF BC) leads BC & Yukon students to the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Fredericton, New Brunswick May 11 - 16, 2015.
Vancouver, BC, May 5, 2015--(T-Net)--On May 10, seventy-two of the brightest young BC and Yukon science students, will make their way to Fredericton, New Brunswick to compete in the 54th Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF).
The students will join hundreds of other bright young scientists from throughout Canada to showcase their original research and to compete for medals, cash awards, scholarships and other prizes worth more than $1 million.
“Our students have a distinguished history at the CWSF, generally winning a disproportionate share of the awards” says Patti Leigh, Executive Director of SFF BC.
This year's research projects range from environmental science through to health science and technological innovation.
One environmental project Beyond the Waste investigated the viability of invasive plant species that travel in hay after passing through the digestive tract of various animals.
The project titled Being Fair Isn't Fair studied how various eye colours are affected by blue light and the resulting effects on the circadian rhythm.
Contemporary social issues also caught the attention of our young scientists: Smart Intersection is a program that can be used to increase the flow of traffic and vehicle efficiency by altering current traffic light cycle lengths and synchronizing them to the speeds of vehicles.
In bringing BC's top young scientists to the Canada-Wide Science Fair, the Science Fair Foundation BC (SFF BC) aims to accomplish two primary goals: to help participants benchmark their scientific and technological achievements against those of their peers; to create a positive scientific and social experience for all the young people involved. A secondary goal is to expose students to peer role models - the best young science and technology minds in the country.
