Team BC & Yukon on Their Way to the National Science Competition This Weekend
Friday, May 13, 2016
Finalists from Regional Science Fairs across the country meet and compete as the Science Fair Foundation BC (SFF BC) leads BC & Yukon students to the Canada-Wide Science Festival in Montréal, Québec May 15 - 20, 2016.
Vancouver, BC, May 13, 2016--(T-Net)--On May 14, seventy-one of the brightest young BC and Yukon science students, will make their way to Montréal, Québec to compete in the 55th Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF).
The students will join hundreds of other bright young scientists from throughout Canada to showcase their real world solutions to some of the globe's most important issues while competing for nearly $1 million in awards, prizes and scholarships.
Team BC/Yukon has achieved immense success in recent years and is currently leading the Provincial Medal Count.
“The variety and sophistication of this year's projects are reflections of the creativity and ingenuity of BC's young scientists”, comments Karen Morley, SFF BC Operations Manager. “We wish them success in Montreal!”
The projects range from environmental science through to health science and technological innovation.
Some examples of this year's projects include: Launched by Leftovers which looks at how much biofuel can be generated from household garbage and Using Genetic Algorithms to Create Safer Self-Driving Cars which aims to use a neural network to control a self-driving car, making it think like a human brain. Contemporary social issues also caught the attention of our young scientists: Stop Being Bullied is an easy-to-use bullying reporting program.
In bringing BC and Yukon's top young scientists to the Canada-Wide Science Festival, SFF BC aims to accomplish two primary goals: to help participants benchmark their scientific and technological achievements against those of their peers; and to create a positive scientific and social experience. A secondary goal is to expose students to peer role models - the best young science and technology minds in the country.
