Vancouver, BC, May 17, 2016--(T-Net)--A British Columbia student received the grand award at the 2016 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) held in Phoenix, Arizona, May 8-13.
Intel ISEF is the world's largest international pre-college science competition. Approximately 1,700 high school students from 77 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for approximately $4 million in prizes.
Austin Wang, from David Thompson Secondary School, Vancouver received the Gordon E. Moore Award of $75,000 US for his project titled Boosting MFC Biocatalyst Performance: A Novel Gene Identification and Consortia Engineering Approach. His researchidentified specific genes in E. coli bacteria which enables them to generate energy in microbial fuel cells (MFC) by converting organic waste into electricity.
The Gordon E. Moore Award recognizes the best among outstanding studentsfrom around the world for innovative research that has the potential to impact both the research field and the world at large.
Austin also wins the Intel ISEF Best of Category Award (Microbiology) of $5,000 and $1,200 from the China Association for Science and Technology. Last year, Austin was awarded Best in Fair at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Austin is one of eight Team Canada students who together brought home $106 000 in awards and scholarships at this year's Intel ISEF.
