Science Fair Foundation BC announces outstanding achievements
at this week's Canada-Wide Science Festival in Montréal, Quebec
Vancouver, BC, May 20, 2016--(T-Net)--Seventy-one participants from 13 regions throughout BC and the Yukon presented projects in Montréal, QC this week at the Canada-Wide Science Festival - the highest level of Science Fair competition in Canada.
British Columbia and Yukon students brought home 119 awards and scholarships including 5 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 20 bronze medals!
Projects included “From Plastic to Plants: An Open Source Approach to 3D Bioprinting”, that developed a low-cost 3D printer capable of printing plants cells that anyone can build; “Leeches unleashed”, which developed a leech repellant from natural resources; and “Maple Syrup can FIX that” which investigated the use of maple syrup as a non-toxic preservative. These are just some of the innovative projects that showcased our youths' concern for health and the environment.
Joining hundreds of the country's brightest young scientific minds, BC and Yukon students competed for medals, cash awards, scholarships and other prizes.
Participating in three categories - junior, intermediate and senior based on school grades 7 to 12, BC and Yukon students received 16 Special Awards and 65 Scholarships for a total of $138,500.
“Our students continue to excel on the national stage” commented Patti Leigh, Executive Director of the Science Fair Foundation BC.
Over 1,000 student finalists, delegates and judges participated in the 55th Canada-Wide Science Festival hosted by McGill University and Youth Science Canada.
