Vancouver, BC, March 22, 2017--(T-Net)--Optigo Networks announced a primary distributor partnership with California-based Controlco for the Optigo Connect product line.
This partnership expands Optigo Connect's availability throughout North America, and advances Optigo and Controlco's shared vision of separate OT networks.
Operational technology (OT) includes HVAC, lighting, security, elevators, and the like. For years, these OT devices have been managed by IT departments in a converged network. At one time, convergence made sense: with only a few OT devices in buildings, they could easily be lumped in with IT.
Buildings have more than just a few smart devices now, though. Reports are showing more than eight billion connected devices will be installed worldwide by the end of this year alone. As more buildings become smart, it's much harder for IT to manage hundreds or thousands of OT devices.
The problem is IT departments aren't experts in managing or securing OT, just as professionals in OT would be out of their depth in IT. When those devices are left unsecure and connected to the IT system, they become a point of vulnerability. Hackers can target HVAC or lighting, for example, to access sensitive data on the IT network.
A simple way to safeguard against this is to separate your IT and OT networks, according to the company.
"Separate networks are the future of smart buildings" stated the company's in a press release.
