Vancouver, BC, June 29, 2007--(T-Net)--MAKE Technologies, an industry leader in application modernization, announced a formal contract has been signed with the Government of New Brunswick to provide a Medicare Legacy Modernization Solution, in partnership with IBM Canada Limited and Barrington Technology Partners Inc. The modernization portion of the contract to replace the existing Medicare computer software system is valued at $3.2 million.

The initiative will improve the operating efficiency of the department through the implementation of modern computing platforms and capabilities, reduce overall operating costs through the retirement of the old system, and help enable the One Patient One Record (OPOR) strategy, a key component of the Department of Health’s Electronic Health Record initiative.

The Medicare solution will be created using MAKE’s Transformational Legacy ModernizationTM (TLM) technology. TLM provides a methodology, framework and toolset that transforms and modernizes older “legacy” software applications rapidly and at minimum risk. The TLM process retains the necessary functionality of the old system, streamlining it in a context relevant in today’s web-oriented infrastructure, and creates a new high-quality, standards-based Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) application.

IBM is providing expertise in their Websphere application suite, which will be the operating platform for the new system, and for the ongoing support, maintenance and enhancements over the term of the contract through the Applications Management Services (AMS) group in Atlantic Canada.

“This contract is an important milestone in the growth of our company, and provides a particularly strong endorsement of our TLM solution,” says Bill Bergen, President & CEO of MAKE Technologies. “We have developed a reputation for relentless dedication to the success of our client projects, and we are very pleased that the Government of New Brunswick has chosen us to lead the modernization of this mission-critical component of the Department of Health’s Medicare delivery system.”

“IBM has demonstrated unparalleled IT capabilities in developing unique healthcare technology and services in existing projects elsewhere in Canada and around the world.” indicated Patrick MacNeil, Associate Partner for IBM Global Business Services in Atlantic Canada. “Public Sector and Healthcare in particular are key areas of focus and we are sharing our best practices to be part of this strategic initiative with the New Brunswick Department of Health.”

Barrington Technology Partners Inc. (BTPI) will be providing local consulting support and expertise in support of this project.

Why Modernize?

In a widespread effort to grow productivity and effectiveness, organizations today are examining options to modernize existing application portfolios into systems based on the service-oriented architecture (SOA) standard. In particular, the mission-critical “legacy” systems that were created a decade or more ago were never intended to run core operations in the context of a strongly web-enabled infrastructure; these system therefore represent a significant, growing liability.
