Vancouver, BC, June 15, 2009--(T-Net)--A new disposable endoscope that provides high quality images and advanced diagnostic capabilities while reducing the cost of minimally invasive surgery is being developed by OneLight Corporation, a Vancouver company. A US patent protecting this innovative technology was issued on June 9, 2009 to OneLight’s parent company, Tidal Photonics Inc. (US Patent 7544163, “Apparatus and methods relating to expanded dynamic range imaging endoscope systems”).
This is a significant step forward in OneLight’s strategic objective of acquiring worldwide intellectual property protection for its proprietary and revolutionary technologies, currently being migrated from R&D applications into clinical products.
OneLight had developed a software-controlled programmable light engine providing users with instantaneous control of all illumination parameters, and giving them the power to create light of virtually any spectral wavelength composition, that will be the at the heart of its new endoscopy work station.
OneLight’s technologies allow significant improvements in image resolution. In addition, surgeons will be able to control illumination that could be used to enhance and better identify tissue characteristics, hidden cancers, and other underlying diseases.
By digitally combining illumination data from OneLight’s digital light source with digital image data from the camera image sensor, the system synthesizes expanded dynamic range images.
This advanced control of illumination means low-cost image sensors can now be used to build disposable endoscopes with high image quality. Disposable endoscopes eliminate the costly step of disinfecting and sterilizing the endoscope before reuse, and could save billions of dollars in health care costs. Last year in the US, there were 57 million minimally invasive surgical procedures, most of which used endoscopes.
“This patent is an important validation of our breakthrough approach to reducing the cost of minimally invasive surgery, by providing high-quality images to surgeons while cutting endoscope costs up to 50%,” said Nick MacKinnon, President and CEO of OneLight Corporation. “Surgeons will benefit from advanced tissue discrimination using the endoscopy workstations we are developing, patients will benefit from improved safety and health care providers will benefit from reduced cost of surgery.”
OneLight products are distributed in major markets throughout the world for scientific and research applications.
