Vancouver, BC, November 1, 2013--(T-Net)--The Applied Science Technicians and Technologists of BC announced that it will stage its 25th anniversary Technology Awards & Recognition Celebration this Saturday in Vancouver.
“Our Silver Anniversary event will honour achievements by many of BC's top Technology Professionals,” declares Executive Director John Leech. “We'll present many professional excellence and leadership awards, recognize two of BC's foremost Technology Employers, and recognize companies and organizations advancing environmental technologies.”
The head of BC's 9th largest professional association adds that ASTTBC will launch - and fund - a 5-year push toward a BC “Science and Technology Culture”, by striving to attract more girls and boys in the K-12 system toward applied science and technology.
This drive is inspired by ASTTBC's new ‘Strategic Direction for Technology Education and Skills in British Columbia'.
“BC needs to encourage more primary and secondary students toward ‘STEM' subjects - Science, Technologies, Engineering and Math,” Leech says. “Any sector of the BC economy you can name now relies on advanced technologies, and on people comfortable with the skills these technologies demand. Where will tomorrow's technology professionals come from, if not our own education system?” questions the Executive Director.
“Our Health Care System demands ever more certified technicians, technologists and technical specialists. The telecommunications industry is full steam ahead. Distribution systems for hydro, natural gas, fresh and wastewater and BC's road and highway systems, already employ tens of thousands of BC technologists and technicians. Even the classic mining, forestry and petrochemical industries now depend on technology,” Leech concludes.
“Canada has nowhere near enough technology professionals trained and qualified for these positions - or even in the educational pipeline. Technologies are packed with rewarding careers and great futures. Technology sizzles,” concludes the ASTTBC Executive Director.
25th Anniversary Technology Awards & Recognition Celebration: 6- 10 p.m., Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel, 1088 Burrard Street
