Vancouver, BC, August 15, 2013--(T-Net)--GigaOM has written an interesting profile on Vancouver start-up company Perch this week.
Read their article here.
Founder and serial entrepreneur Danny Robinson was also on stage at Grow 2013 Aug 14-15, 2013 showing the new Perch app.
Perch is a new start-up company founded in May, 2012 by Danny Robinson (speaker at Grow 2013), Michael Perone, Zach Levow, and Steve McKenzie in Vancouver as a way to seamlessly connect with people using video.
The company current has 6 employees and has office space in the Launch Academy facility in downtown Vancouver, and a crew of well known investors and advisors (see below).
The company is working on a hands-free video communication app designed to use a dedicated iOS device to bring people together over distances.
It's kind of a cool idea actually - good for connecting with multiple remote offices, work from home employees, or family. We can even see applications for T-Net use on a few things.
Basically - you just hook up an iPad on the wall for "always on" video communication. You can't hear anything from the other side (and others can't hear you) unless you look directly into the screen, and the system recognizes you.
Their pitch line is:
-------------------------------------------
Just say hello
Mount a device in two locations
to create a live, always-on video portal
-------------------------------------------
We don't usually show so much company promo stuff - but what the heck, they've done a pretty good job on it, and it helps show everyone how it works.
Simple Setup
Mount your device to a wall, then tap the location you wish to connect to.
Always-On
Perch was designed to be always-on, so it's always ready when you are.
Smart Privacy
By default audio is turned off, but turns on when you look at the camera.
See a full screen video of how it works here (or click below).
What is Perch?
Perch is an always-on video connection for the people you talk to everyday. Setting up Perch in your home office will let you easily stay in contact with the people in your life. Because Perch is always ready, it's simpler and more straightforward than other communication solutions.
The app is specifically designed to make always-on video communication natural and unobtrusive. By default the mic is turned off when you're not having a conversation and when you want to be heard, the portal automatically detects when you look at the app.
