SFU Technology Entrepreneurship student Braeden Peterson will be in Mexico this week for the international Student Energy Summit, sharing his views on sustainable innovation and networking on global energy solutions.
Burnaby, BC, July 4, 2017--(T-Net)--Simon Fraser University student Braeden Peterson was one of more than 800 university students that participated in this month's International Student Energy Summit (SES) in Merida, Mexico.
The students focused on the global need for sustainable energy, discuss energy trends and issues, and work towards long-term solutions to secure their future.
The North Delta/Surrey student, one of just a few Canadians who attended , wass ready for the challenge. “We're the next generation of energy leaders,” says Peterson, a fourth-year student in SFU's Technology Entrepreneurship (Tech E) program, who also studies political science.
“To preserve our world, we need to work together to create new ways to support sustainable energy. We're the generation who needs to take charge.”
Peterson used the opportunity to share his passion for sustainable innovation and develop international connections. “It's all about engaging with like-minded young people,” he says. “The millennial generation is the single most connected, ambitious and globally conscious generation in history.
“The summit presented a massive opportunity to activate this generation to step outside partisan, ‘siloed' thinking to engage in meaningful dialogue to tackle global energy issues. Our collective input and brain-storming will be a major starting point.”
Peterson's Tech E team is currently working to determine how technology can be used to fine tune health care wait times and patient flow in B.C. He is also working on a project with several local city parks departments to monitor their sustainability efforts.
The Tech E program, which combines mechatronics system engineering and business programs, helps students develop market-inspired technological products before they complete their studies.
Peterson, 22, is also a 2017 Surrey Board of Trade Top 25 under 25 award recipient, a Rotary Club and high school leadership speaker, a board member of Vancouver's Royal Commonwealth Society and co-founder of SFU's Students for Humanity group.
Following the recent June talks, he also joined delegates in a community contribution program, planting trees, visiting homes in neighboring Mexican communities and joining in a solar panel project.
