  • To be the premier brand of satellite outdoor units for broadband access

  • To become the global partner of choice for network systems integrators and service providers

Our business

Norsat designs, engineers and distributes products for use in the satellite wireless communications and cable television industries. Norsat’s products are sold through the Company’s offices in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., China and Singapore, and through a global network of partners and distributors.

Norsat markets and distributes consumer and commercial satellite entertainment and Internet products to dealers and system operators through its U.S. subsidiary, Norsat America Inc. Norsat is a publicly-traded company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (NII) and NASDAQ (NSATF).

Key Products. Norsat sells commercial satellite wireless communications components, including receivers (LNBs), transmitters (HNBs) and transceivers (TNBs) and public and private cable headend systems including an addressable cable system subscriber management system used in pay TV applications. The Company is a preferred supplier for the outdoor unit (ODU) for Europe’s ASTRA-NET project, the world’s first commercial satellite application of interactive broadband multimedia utilizing the Ka-band. ODUs for C- and Ku-band applications are distributed globally.

A talented, multilingual staff. Norsat has a proud history of achievement dating back to 1977 when it became the world’s first company to design and install a personal satellite receiving system. Today, Norsat employs approximately 160 people worldwide, including experienced, multilingual sales and marketing teams, and a highly-qualified group of development engineers who are responsible for designing the Company’s state-of-the-art satellite and cable communications products.

A new, world-class engineering facility. A traditional strength of Norsat has been its technological expertise. The Company’s new facility features 9,500 sq. ft. of state-of-the-art product and prototype engineering, customization and testing laboratories capable of generating microwave frequencies up to 60 GHz.

Key products

LNBs  (Low Noise Block downconverters). are located at the centre of a satellite dish. They convert incoming microwave signals into lower frequency electrical signals that can be easily and economically routed over standard coaxial cable to a remote receiver. Norsat has LNBs in various frequencies including: C-band, Ku-band and LMCS-band.

HNBs.  Norsat’s HNBs (High power Norsat Block upconverters) are located at the focal point of a VSAT antenna. They convert the data signal from the user’s modem into a 1 or 2 watt transmit signal used to transmit the data to the satellite. Norsat offers HNBs in various frequencies including Ku-band, Standard C, India C and Brazil C-band.

TNBs.  In order to help system integrators eliminate the cost of component assembly, Norsat introduced a line of TNBs (Two-way Norsat Block converters) based on Norsat LNBs and HNBs. TNBs are offered in a wide range of C-, extended C- and Ku-band specifications and are suitable for most VSAT applications. The Company is currently engineering a next generation of TNBs that will meet growing demand for a compact, low-cost outdoor unit (ODU).

N-Code II. There are two parts to Norsat’s N-Code II technology: signal scrambling and descrambling. Norsat designs and distributes “headend” units or the major systems placed in cable control facilities that scramble the cable pay channels delivered to subscribers in large networks. It also licenses the N-Code II technology that descrambles the channels in the subscriber’s residence. N-Code II is compatible with, and suitable for, a wide range of networks including, cable television, microwave multipoint distribution systems (MMDS), LMDS and satellite broadcasting systems.

Strengths

  •      Norsat is a pioneer in the development of innovative, superior quality commercial satellite and cable products. We have a solid track record for designing and engineering high quality industry firsts and following up with the introduction of commercially viable versions for worldwide markets.

  •      In addition to the global sales team based in our Burnaby head office, Norsat maintains sales and marketing facilities in the U.K., the U.S., China and Singapore, selling directly to customers and through a global network of partners and distributors.

  •      Norsat is the world’s number one supplier of commercial LNBs, an essential component of satellite dishes. LNB customers include Star TV, Hughes Network Systems and Gilat Spacenet. In early 1999, the Company introduced complementary lines of HNBs and TNBs.

  •      Norsat was the first company to introduce a commercially viable Ka-band LNB. This was a significant achievement as it enabled satellite manufacturers to proceed with the development and testing of space to earth data transmission over the Ka bandwidth.
Ka-band is a frequency reserved for faster, two-way, interactive communications applications.

  •      Norsat has developed state-of-the-art subscriber management technology which is becoming the defacto standard for China’s growing cable television market.

  •      Norsat America is a leading distributor of satellite-based entertainment and Internet services in the United States and is a specialist in providing systems for both the residential and commercial MDU markets.
