On-Line Venture Capital Guide

By: Brent Holliday

First things first. There are five main sources of financing early stage companies: Agency grants (including government and research funds), Venture Capital, Junior Public Markets, Banks and individual investors (referred to as angels).

Venture Capital in my world means private equity placements by institutions well versed in risk capital and creating sustainable companies. There are other forms of venture capital, especially in western Canada, that are of a junior public capital nature. This is NOT a guide to public capital on the VSE or ASE.

There are also many lending institutions with programs and products for early stage companies, but they are all different forms of debt. Again, this is not a guide to that type of financing. Lastly, there are angels. Angels are private financiers that, like stock exchanges and banks, fill a role in the financing of companies. They are extremely hard to find. Hence the term. And you won't find them here. So, for all other types of financing, the best list in BC belongs to Mike Volker's Vancouver Enterprise Forum site. His money links will show you where to look.
