In 2020, The WIMDI Speaker Series is inviting engaging speakers each month to give talks on topics that help women kill it at work.
Welcome to Talk 2 of 12 - Using Your Head & Your Heart in Tough Conversations
Communication at work can occasionally be fraught. Whether it's dealing with a direct report who's struggling to hit their targets or trying to get buy-in from that one stubborn colleague that you'd much rather avoid (but who is unfortunately powerful enough that they are unavoidable), there are a number of opportunities for conversations to go sideways. Couples therapists are experts in getting warring factions to come to a resolution, so let's learn their best tricks and apply them to our challenging workplace communications!
This talk will use couples' therapy techniques to help you handle tough conversations at work. We'll cover:
- Using the Imago Dialogue Technique to navigate conflict at work
- How the way your brain is wired affects you in tough conversations
- Identifying your communication Style: Are you a Turtle or an Octopus?
- Practicing communicating with subordinates, peers, and superiors
The goal of this talk is to help you keep your cool (no matter what!) while feeling heard and understood.
This talk will be given by Dr Michelle Gibson, PhD, RCC, CIRT, a Couples Relationship Therapist.
Michelle has been a counsellor helping individuals, couples and youth since 1993. Her work involves guiding clients to gain insight into their feelings and behaviour so they can make more positive, empowering choices. In couples work, be it with romantic partners, parents and children or business colleagues, successful relationship building blocks are always founded in effective communication wherein each person feels heard and understood; that's what Michelle teaches.
Fun fact: Michelle used to be a TV reporter, interviewer, host and producer!
