In 2020, The WIMDI Speaker Series is inviting engaging speakers each month to give talks on topics that help women kill it at work.
Welcome to Talk 3 of 12 - Stopping Sh*tty Comments from Undermining Your Success
All of us have been on the receiving end of demoralizing comments from colleagues. "Are you here to take the minutes?", "Are you sure you really want to do this job? I could get someone else to do it", "Can you get me a coffee?", etc. It can be hard to establish your professional credibility when it feels like your competency is always under attack and being questioned from all angles. Well, no more!
This talk will focus on how to not let those everyday sh*tty comments undermine you and your career. We'll cover:
- Examples of comments that trip us up
- Common pitfalls: The risks and dangers of internalizing these comments
- How to develop a mindset that will help you stay resilient, no matter what people say to (or about!) you
- Four effective strategies for dealing with negativity without taking it on yourself
The goal of this talk is to help you not internalize the negative at work so you can focus on your strengths and building your amazing career.
This talk will be given by Darrell Farrow, P. Geo., a Geologist, Strategic Coach, and Mentor.
Darrell is a geologist with over 30 years of experience leading and mentoring in a male-dominated industry. She's spent her career navigating the oldest of old-school boys clubs: the South African Mining Industry. Darrell started her career as the first woman geologist employed in the mines and worked her way into senior technical management. All while balancing a successful career with raising a family and creating an equal parenting partnership with her husband. Darrell believes whole-heartedly that it is possible for women to be successful and step out of the roles and patterns they've learned from a young age. Now Darrell is a leadership coach working with ambitious women who want to achieve their career goals while successfully parenting and leading balanced lives.
