In 2023, The WIMDI Speaker Series is inviting engaging speakers each month to give interactive talks on topics that help women kill it at work.
Welcome to Talk 2 of 13 - The Weeds Are Not Safe
There's nothing more comforting to us technical types than whipping out the old spreadsheet and getting some "real work" done. We spend years and years of our careers training ourselves to thrive in the weeds and then quickly try to undo it all as we climb the corporate ladder and move into roles with bigger scope.
One of the biggest challenges that women in male-dominated industries face as they move up the ladder is working at the right strategic level.
We let ourselves get pulled into the day-to-day tactical management of team deliverables instead of doing the scary, ambiguous strategy work. It's comfortable and familiar, but ultimately it torpedoes our career prospects and limits our team's potential and impact.
This talk will focus on the danger of staying too tactically-focused and failing to develop your strategic muscles for senior leadership roles. We'll cover:
Why getting out of the details and into high-level strategic work is essential to being hired into - and being effective in - Director, VP, and Executive roles
How societal and workplace gender dynamics push women into lower-influence (and lower-seniority!) execution-focused work
The four lies we tell ourselves that leads to us staying stuck at a level below our full potential
Concrete steps you can take to develop your capacity for strategic work so you can create bigger impact at work
The goal of this talk is to help you work at a more strategic level so that you can confidently take the reins in senior roles and produce results that get you noticed.
Holly Burton, Leadership Coach for Women in Male-Dominated Industries
Holly is a leadership coach for women in male-dominated industries. She works one-on-one with ambitious women to help them lead, get promoted, and create the careers they actually want in industries they love.
As a mining engineer for the first ten years of her career, Holly was exposed to one of the most male-dominated spaces -- just 17% female. She uses the unique perspective she gained as a woman in mining, alongside her obsessive nerdiness for all things feminism, leadership, and career to help women create the working world they deserve while they wait for the rest of society to catch up.
Privacy, Photography and Recording*: Online WIMDI events use Zoom, and we will be recording this event in the hopes of eventually releasing replays of the speaker portions of our events. As such we cannot guarantee that no photos, screenshots, or recordings will be taken of you during the event by event organizers or by other attendees. We love it when our members connect at our events using both video and audio, but we understand if our members prefer to participate with their video turned off to preserve (more of) their privacy.
This is a networking group for women in male-dominated industries (eg: mining, finance, tech, engineering, construction, politics, etc.). We meet once a month for coffee/tea to chat, comiserate, strategize, and cheer each other on. It's a great way to connect with women facing your issues when they are few and far between in your work life.
