In 2020, The WIMDI Speaker Series is inviting engaging speakers each month to give talks on topics that help women kill it at work.
Welcome to Talk 4 of 12 - Demystifying Company Equity: Shares vs. Options
Compensation packages can be complex an involve many factors from salary, benefits, and vacation, all the way over to niche legal concerns like intellectual property ownership for your side hustle. Lots of women are starting to get better at advocating for themselves and their pay, only to find themselves faced with a new and opaque compensation type: Company Equity.
This talk will teach you all the basics about how companies use equity and options so that you can understand how and when they will play into your compensation package. Whether you're raising in the ranks and equity is standard, or you're working for a small start up, this talk will help you learn how to evaluate equity offerings from employers.
This talk will focus on Options to purchase shares in a company. We'll cover:
- The difference between options and shares
- What happens when you are granted options
- Whether options are the right compensation for you
- What you own once you exercise your options
The goal of this talk is to explain the differences between shares and options and enable you to decide whether granting options in your company or accepting options as compensation is right for you.
This talk will be given by Morgan McDonald, Corporate and Commercial Counsel for startup and growth companies.
