This position will be focusing primarily on our Reserve Power applications, which include telecommunications, IT, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), utilities and switchgear, security, emergency lighting and general electronics. Some of the reserve power brands include PowerSafe,DataSafe, and Genesis. Our extensive product range serves a variety of reserve power applications and consistently delivers the most effective, powerful and reliable batteries available.
Job Purpose:
Alpha Technologies Ltd. has an opportunity for a knowledgeable, proactive, Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to develop processing and controls software for our power conversion management systems, at our Vancouver (Burnaby) facility.
As an Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer at a fast-paced organization, you will be a key member of a cross-functional team tasked with the responsibility to design and develop reliable and cost effective power conversion products (Rectifiers, AC UPS, Converters, Inverters) from concept to production.

You will be an integral part of high-performance development teams that successfully introduce new designs into manufacturing on budget and on schedule, and meeting cost targets.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Primary duty is to design and develop power conversion products (Rectifiers, AC UPS, Converters, Inverters) from concept to production.
- Develop detailed requirements and specifications based on product and system requirements, working in concert with project managers, technical leaders, and staff.
- Design, write, and test firmware for embedded digital signal processors (DSPs), general purpose processors (GPPs), embedded systems-on-a-chip (SOIC) and microprocessors/microcontrollers to implement specified functionality.
- Write technical documents and diagrams required by the product/software development processes and standards.
- Prepares, and supervises preparation of, technical documents and diagrams required by the product/software development processes and standards
- Develop the products using world leading design practices and standards, including modeling and simulation, tolerance analysis, design for reliability, design for manufacturing and assembly, and design for serviceability
- Negotiate and manage expectations for product requirements and new product introduction timelines with Product Management and Sales
- Provide input into the management of projects including efficient use of team resources, and product road-mapping with corresponding timeline creation and rigid implementation
- Support the identification and implementation of future, breakthrough technologies that will improve the overall competitiveness and cost position of Alpha's Power Conversion products
Qualifications:
- Bachelors or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering and minimum of 7 years experience
- Solid engineering experience with power electronics design and product development with embedded microcontrollers
- Experience with sampled-data real-time control systems, specifically for power conversion or motor drive type applications
- Experience/expertise in the fields of:
- Embedded Firmware Design
- Real-Time process control
- Power electronics hardware with embedded microcontrollers
- Power conversion process, including signal processing and control algorithms
- Industrial protocols
- Proven ability to:

- Support and mentor the technical staff on strategic innovation-linked products

- Demonstrated experience in developing embedded software using structured software design techniques
- Demonstrated experience with one or more communications protocols such as CAN, Modbus, USB, Ethernet
- Experience with embedded systems with and without RTOS
- Digital real-time control design experience (firmware)
- Demonstrated experience with testing and debugging embedded real-time software using specialized test and debug tools
- Demonstrated experience in developing C language firmware for DSPs, GPPs and microprocessors/microcontrollers
- Demonstrated experience with digital control interfaces such as SPI, I2C, or UART.
- Detail-oriented, creative, and results driven, with a strong operational mindset; decisive "get it done" and "deliver results" mentality
- Customer focused with good relationship building skills
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills - ability to communicate clearly and concisely to all levels within the organization including formal meetings and presentations.
Desired Qualifications:
- Working knowledge with the use of electronic test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, power sources and loads, etc.
- Experience with DSP, e.g. digital filter design and fixed-point arithmetic.
- Experience with SoC peripherals such as ADC, PWM, comparators, etc.
- Experience with concurrency in a single and multi-core environment.
- Familiar with the Agile development process, SCRUM and experience in an R&D environment
- Significant modeling, simulation, and analysis experience with tools like Matlab/Simulink, SPICE, and PSIM
