Job Purpose
Alpha Technologies Ltd., an EnerSys company, has an opportunity for a LEAD MECHANICAL ENGINEER.
Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Team Leader, the Lead Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design of mechanical assemblies, subassemblies, and components for new product development opportunities and Sustaining Engineering projects.
To be successful in this role, the candidate must be a self-starter who is able to productively thrive in an energetic, fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to quickly develop depth of expertise with respect to the requirements, technologies and components that comprise Alpha's power system solutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Creates detailed mechanical component, enclosure, wiring harness, assembly, indoor box bay and outdoor cabinet design.
Liaises with the product team to develop product concepts.
Creates mechanical specifications and maintain competency in engineering tools, methods, standards and best practices relating to mechanical design and fabrication.
Estimates the scope of work for mechanical elements of projects to support project planning, and product costing.
Designs, analyses and documents the components of the complete mechanical concept.
Chooses materials and manufacturing processes for the mechanical parts.
Decides upon the appropriate method of manufacture, i.e., sheet metal fabrication, stamping, plastic injection molding, die-casting, and aluminum extrusions etc.
Works with toolmakers and the project team to optimize material and process selection.
Creates assembly diagrams to define mechanical configurations.
Identifies and communicate technical risks, and conduct design reviews.
Ensures that products meet all manufacturing requirements (DFM) for reliable production.
Ensures products and or assignments are within design, budget and schedule limitations.
Compiles and enters BOM's and creates design documentation.
Assists with prototype builds; support the engineering team with testing as needed.
Supports sustaining engineering activities through the planning, project management, and execution of multiple small-to-mid-scale projects.
Drives LEAN thinking and continuous improvement through standardize component and component design.
Institutes innovative designs and methods via new technology investigation and characterization, competitive product assessment, evaluation of new tools, and up-to-date monitoring of industry trends.
Actively follows, take ownership of, contribute to and advocate Alpha's Product Life Cycle management (PLC) and Product Design Process (PDP).
Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent knowledge, training and experience is required.
A minimum 7 years of related experience is required; mechanical design position in similar industry is preferred.
Looking for a self-starter with a positive attitude who can operate with minimal supervision.
Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D design software is a must.
Familiarity with 2D CAD design software (AutoCAD) is an asset.
Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, stamping, plastic injection molding, aluminum extrusion, wiring harness, sub-assembly and assembly design with system level prototyping is required.
Prior experience in designing and building integrated and modular power systems from concept to commercialization is an asset.
Prior experience in designing indoor and outdoor enclosures, chassis for electronic packaging, and housing to meet minimum rating of NEMA3 and IP54 is an asset.
Familiarity with safety testing / certification to various regulatory standards such as CSA / UL 60950, Telcordia GR-63 and GR-487 for Telecommunication are highly desired.
Understanding of standard Engineering and Production documentation, including BOM, assembly and part drawings, work instructions, qualified parts lists, electrical schematics, ECN's, etc.
Understanding of Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFM/A) principles.
Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing processes is an asset.
Knowledge of material selection, of their properties and sources is an asset.
Knowledge of the tool making process is an asset.
Knowledge of PLM documentation vault (or similar) and processes is an asset.
Knowledge of Electromechanical systems and components, with a preference towards AC & DC power systems experience (examples include high-voltage & high-current distribution & cabling, indoor/outdoor enclosures & racks, thermal management components, magnetics, fuses & breakers, communication & data interfaces, EMI shielding, etc.) is a great asset.
Knowledge and understanding of electrical/electronics circuit functionality (reading schematics, etc.) is a great asset.
Knowledge or prior experience in control sensors, smart brakers, connectivity diagnostic and PCBA layout is a great asset.
Performing accelerated development work as an integral part of a collaborative team completing projects on time and on budget is highly desired.
Ability to troubleshoot and remedy product related issues; work on cost reduction and reliability improvement design activities and multiple-sourcing exercises is highly desired.
