Product Development Engineer Ballard has an exciting opportunity for a regular, full time fuel cell Product Development Engineer in our Stack Engineering team. As a Stack Engineer, you will be working directly on fuel cell core technology, surrounded by world-class experts. The successful candidate will work within a structured environment to apply their strong technical skills to the selection of mechanical components and sub-systems, the design and verification/validation plan for new products, and support testing in the lab and in the field. Key Responsibilities: - Actively support and/or lead design of hardware components, including: machined, cast, or injection molded components. Sourcing, validation and verification of mechanical and electrical components,
- Generate engineering documentation for mechanical and electrical components, including:
- Component design requirements and specifications;
- Trade-off analysis
- DFMEA
- DFMAs,
- Design reviews and reports
- Detailed test plans
- Conformity matrices
- Dimensioning (GD&T)
- Part and/or material specifications
- Develop cost effective designs that meet functionality, durability and robustness requirements.
- Interface with equipment suppliers, fabricators, and internal supply chain to source mechanical components meeting automotive (IATF 16949 /VDA) standards.
- Lead failure analysis investigations on failed components following defined processes.
- Coordinate and track cross functional activities across the organization
Qualifications: - Degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, engineering physics, or a related field and at least 6 years of directly related experience.
- Experience in both an industrial and product development setting.
- Good knowledge of structural design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, small-scale rotational equipment, fasteners, and selection of general mechanical components.
- Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions to meet cost and functional requirements.
- Proven ability to work to time schedule and commitments for deliverables; determine scope of work and plan effectively to meet those commitments.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent written and oral communication skills.
Assets: - Experience with standard engineering practices such as DFMEA, Product Certification, Codes and Standards, and Safety & Reliability Analysis.
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with dealing with outside vendors and fabrication shops.
- Previous background with fuel cells and/or fuel cell systems is preferred.
