Ballard has an immediate opportunity for a Senior Drafting and Tolerancing Engineer to join the Burnaby Mechanical Design Services Team.
This Engineer will be working as part of a team involved in creating the Fuel Cell Stack designs and drawings in support of various projects and continuation engineering efforts throughout the product development process including conceptualization through final production release and after-sales support.
This position requires the skills and competencies necessary to evaluate and review design documentation for accuracy and quality. The individual is expected to reinforce best practices and standards to applicable design documentation, as well as company policies and procedures to ensure quality product releases.
Responsibilities: - Responsible for the accuracy and completeness of drawings with regards to clarity, fit, views, dimensioning, GD&T, and conformance to company/ASME Y14.5M design and drawing standards.
- Ownership of internal documentation, drawing, and modelling standards and practices, with regular updates to these documents to better align with modern industry best standards and practices. Develop and lead regular training sessions alongside other continuous improvement activities to advance team and company effectiveness.
- Responsible for mentoring designers and engineers on adhering to best practices and standards. Assists designers and engineers in clarifying ambiguities by instructing them on required documentation changes
- Provide guidance to ensure that all documentation is complete and accurately reflects the engineering design intent. Assists with the generation of (and helps validate) calculations as needed to ensure all dimensions, tolerance limits, and other drawing details are correct
- Ensure documentation packages meet necessary standards and requirements (internal, external, customer, international, manufacturing, etc). May require reviewing of complete drawing packages for external customers
- Understand engineering concepts and directs designers in translating them to engineering design drawings
- Review supplier data and supplier and manufacturer drawings as required
- Support DFMA activities to ensure manufacturability of parts and components, ensuring that tolerancing and designs are appropriate as per the planned fabrication techniques and supplier capability
- Perform other duties and accept responsibilities to ensure the overall success of the department.
- Participate and contribute in design reviews across all programs and platforms
- Understand, support, and participate in documentation release through the change management procedure
Requirements: - B.S., or associate degree, or diploma in mechanical technology program or related field.
- 7 - 10+ years related experience in design, drafting, or drawing checking role.
- Experience Creo Parametric and IntralinkPDM preferred.
- Familiar with various Advanced CAD Modeling and Drafting techniques (i.e. Top-Down Design Process, Large Assembly Management, Simplified Representations, Model Based Definition, etc).
- Experience with shop practices such as machining, molding, additive manufacturing, and other emerging fabrication processes favored.
- Proficiency in Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) experience required. GD&T Professional designation preferred.
- Ability to interpret and apply drawing and engineering standards from various international and industry standards.
- Should be an energetic, motivated, and detail orientated individual with the ability to work in a team environment of various backgrounds, experience levels, and personalities.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision. Self-starter with good decision-making skills and the ability to take initiative and solve problems while dealing with a variety of variables, either independently or through collaboration with other departments.
- Ability to adapt to shifting priorities.
- Excellent oral and written communication and documentation skills are essential.
