Ballard's Product Engineering Department has an opening for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Mechanical Engineering team developing the next generation of Ballard's fuel cell power systems. The successful candidate will work within a structured environment to apply their strong technical skills to the selection and design of mechanical components and sub-systems, the design and verification/validation plan for new products, and support testing in the lab and in the field.
Responsibilities: - Mechanical design of custom components and test fixtures, including some basic electrical design.
- Interface with vendors including machine shops, rapid prototyping facilities and fabricators to help provide components in short time frames.
- Work across programs and functions to support design and procurement of custom equipment and parts.
- Support failure analysis investigations on failed mechanical systems and components.
- Support mechanical design during fuel cell system commissioning in the field.
- Provide alternate ideas for materials or machining procedures, identifying what is important and what can be changed "on the fly".
- Expediting purchasing of components and hardware, minimizing delivery times.
- Participate in growing the functional competency of the Mechanical Engineering team.
Requirements: - Degree in mechanical engineering or a related field and 6 years of directly related experience.
- Very hands-on with experience of assembly work, lab test set up, tools and fittings.
- Skilled CAD user - CREO preferred.
- Experience with dealing with OEMs, outside vendors and fabrication shops.
- Good knowledge of structural design, fabrication processes, assembly processes and selection of general mechanical components.
- Proven ability to work to tight time schedules and commitments for deliverables.
- Ability to work independently making sound decisions with focus on the goal.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle multiple changing priorities
- Previous background with fuel cells and/or fuel cell systems is preferred.
