The Technical Director, Fuel Cell Module Product will deliver reliable affordable fuel cell module products according to Ballard's Product Portfolio Roadmap. This role takes end-to-end ownership of the product from the creation of product requirements (PRD) to deployment in the field. Success in the role will be evidenced by product deployment in customer's hands with industry-leading quality, performance, and cost according to an approved timeline.
This position requires a view of the product, product development process, and deployed resources as both tools and boundaries to create and execute a realistic Plan with clear milestones for visible and measurable achievement. The Technical Director works across involved teams to realize achievement of the Plan including Engineering, Program Management, Product Planning, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, and Commercial functions.
Responsibilities:
- Interpret market needs in cooperation with Commercial and Product Planning functions to create technical specifications including Product Requirements Document and associate flow-down requirements to component level.
- Assess and estimate overall resource demand (people, test equipment, money) to achieve Quality, Performance, and Cost according to market needs
- In cooperation with Program Manager(s) and cross functional teams create a realistic Plan that lays out the product development activity from beginning to end including field deployment and associated early product performance management in customer hands. The Plan shall include a timeline with clear measurable milestones and associated Gates to visibly measure progress to the Plan.
- Engage top leadership to gain approval of the Plan in cooperation with Program Manager(s) and related leaders.
- Within the approved Plan create and control resource budgets for people, test equipment, and money in cooperation with Program Manager(s).
- Regularly update senior leadership on overall resource consumption per the Plan including forecasts of future needs and potential budget changes.
- Anticipate roadblocks from technical learnings. Build remediation and countermeasure actions into the Plan and budget and manage matters daily.
- Overcome technical barriers by tactical and strategic technical choices within the boundaries of the Plan
- Oversee daily execution by engineering Core Team and adjust workflow as required to keep the Plan.
- Elevate all barriers to achieving the Plan after utmost effort has been applied to remedy problems within Technical Director control.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Hands-on experience designing and developing fuel cell module products
- 10+ years experience in relevant industry
- Knowledge of industrialization of mechanical and electrical systems, including tooling and high-volume manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of structural design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow design
- Demonstrated capability to create and following product development Plans
- Demonstrated experience with engineering drawing release and software release processes
- Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions to meet cost and functional requirements.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent written/verbal communication skills.
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
