Position: Senior Plasma Physicist
About Us:
General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.
Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.
Position Overview:
As a member of the Applied Physics team, the Senior Plasma Physicists will contribute to the development of our magnetized target fusion (MTF) power plant. The Senior Plasma Physicist will aid in the analysis of our experimental campaigns, and then use that information to develop models that reconcile experimental results with simulation and help inform the direction of future development.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has strong communication skills and can stay focused on goals while operating in a fast-paced development environment. They would possess the drive required to work on difficult problems, is excited by alternative and innovative solutions and are comfortable with working both independently and within a group.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyzing and integrating diagnostic data from General Fusion plasma experiments to develop comprehensive hypotheses for evolution of plasma characteristics, and reconcile them with simulation results and reconstructions
- Proposing new experimental campaigns and corresponding simulations to answer key questions regarding plasma parameter evolution, and optimization of MTF targets
- Working with the simulation, reconstruction, and diagnostic teams in the development of dynamic models of compact toroid (CT) plasmas under compression.
Relevant Skills and Experience:
Required:
- Strong background in research in fusion science and magnetized plasma
- Strong grasp of plasma theory and be able to apply relevant theory to develop models of the experimental system as well as to contribute to technological innovations
- Proven ability to work well within a team setting
Preferred:
- Experience in Magnetized Target Fusion
The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets, and each team member will need to become familiar with the full scope of the plasma development and understand how their work relates to the whole. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.
Education:
Ph. D. or equivalent degree in plasma physics, fusion science or closely related field.
