General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe, and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emissions grid.
Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.
Position Overview:
As a member of the Compression Engineering team, the Electrical Engineer will work as a collaborative part of a diverse engineering team, in the development of General Fusion's Fusion Demonstration Plant (FDP), as well as in support of several other experimental test beds which are both in development and operational stages.
The Electrical Engineer will focus on developing electrical systems to support our wide range of experimental platforms. This is a hands-on position that requires experience with real-world applications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Electrical and controls support of existing test beds, performing continual upgrades, maintenance, and improvements as required for the evolution of the system
- Design of electrical systems for new test beds, working with the other engineers to achieve the system requirements of the test bed
- Build physical electrical systems for new test beds, including building cables, custom PCBs, and electronics racks, running all the cables and connecting to all the required electronic components, to make a complete system integrated with all the other systems
- Integrate established diagnostic and sensor technologies into test bed systems, and provide a means of obtaining and handling the output data
- Document electrical designs in an organized and clear manner
Requirements:
Education:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience
General:
- A willingness to work hands-on to execute designs and solutions in an R&D setting, including building systems from scratch, prototyping, testing, analyzing, and iterating
- Experience designing, building, and implementing electrical solutions for challenging environments (examples include: high voltage, high temperature, high-speed timing, high noise/EMI environments, high vacuum, reactive metal)
- Experience with integrated multi-disciplined designs and systems
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and drive the success of individual projects from start to finish, including integrating with other systems and collaborating with other engineering teams toward the common goal
- Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly advancing and evolving work environment
- Strong communication skills
- Attention to detail and organization
Specific:
These skills are valuable at General Fusion, but the successful candidate need not have all of these skills to apply:
- Experience with Altium PCB design software
- Experience with design of analog electronics systems
- Experience integrating data processing or DAQ equipment with control systems (LabVIEW, Industrial PLC, or other)
- Experience with Python, C/C++ or other relevant programming languages
- Experience with Solidworks Electrical
- Design and implementation of PLC hardware and programming
- Experience with FPGA design, and VHDL
- Experience with SPICE circuit modelling
The work involved in this project requires a strong electrical aptitude, flexibility, and a passion for solving complex problems. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.
