We're on the hunt for a Systems Engineer - Satellite Ground Segment in our Geointelligence Engineering Team at our Richmond office.
Our mission is to turn data into insight. From detecting changes in fragile ecosystems to monitoring northern ice floes and shipping routes, our near-real time data of Earth observation and the environment makes our Geointelligence team a leader in geospatial imagery, ground stations, enterprise geospatial systems and defence programs.
As a member of the Engineering team you will work on our programs such as Chorus Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Satellite, Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC), Square Kilometer Array (SKA) radio telescope, Aeronautical Navigation products, and Marine Insights products. You will work as part of a technical team to develop new capabilities, enhance existing capabilities and deliver solutions to our customers.

Systems Engineer - Satellite Ground Segment
Role:
As part of the Ground Segment Systems Engineering team, the individual will work with other engineers in a multi-disciplinary team environment to create, deliver and maintain engineering solutions to downlink imagery and telemetry, process imagery, create value-added products and process orders from our customers in a cost-effective way.
Responsibilities:
As a Systems Engineer - Satellite Ground Segment, you may have a wide range of responsibilities that include:
- Working with both internal and external customers to understand their needs and requirements;
- Transforming high level requirements into lower level feature requirements;
- Performing technical engineering tasks, such as operational analyses and trade-off studies, to define system design and subsystem requirement details;
- Devising solutions for creating, enhancing and delivering systems and subsystem features;
- Developing and revising deliverable documents such as engineering plans, requirements specifications, interface control documents, and operational concepts;
- Presenting technical design proposals and reports to internal and/or external customers in clear, complete, concise and non-ambiguous terms;
- Supporting work planning and cost estimates during the project's lifecycle;
- Supporting validation and verification activities of the overall system;
- Ensuring high up time of in-service complex satellite ground system and data processing facility while commissioning enhancements/new features and conducting system maintenance to meet stringent customer availability requirements, which may include:
- Robust feature design for reliability, availability, and maintainability;
- Writing, reviewing, testing and validating maintenance and commissioning procedures; and
- Conducting risks analyses;
- Interface with and manage sub-contractors from a technical perspective including providersrs of: satellite ground station antennas, maintenance services, computer hardware and software suppliers.
- Ensure sub-contractors are fulfilling their technical contract requirements, aid sub-contractors in troubleshooting (Electrical, Mechanical & Software) faults and supervise sub-contractors when performing annual maintenance.
Required Experience:
- A University Degree or Technical Diploma from an accredited institution in engineering, computer science, or a combination of related education and experience.
- 5-10 years experience demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility and complexity
- Have an understanding of different types of engineering lifecycle as applicable from large complex programs to software development;
- Have familiarity with any of the following software tools:
- MS Excel, for the purposes of engineering analyses
- Requirements Management tools such as DOORS
- MS Office
- Experience in system integration of multiple subsystems
- Excellent troubleshooting, fault isolation, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills in all of Electrical, Mechanical and Software areas;
- Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and customer interaction skills;
- Be a self-starter with the ability to perform in a dynamic working environment; and
- Possess excellent problem-solving skills
- Have a team-friendly attitude and willingness to learn.
While not mandatory, candidates will benefit from any of the following:
- Familiarity with modern software development methodology, tools, and software specification;
- Prior involvement in remote sensing or earth observation missions; and
- Knowledge of or experience in:
- Microsoft Windows and Linux environments
- VM, Docker, Kubernetes
- Computer networks
- Security system development
- Operating system administration
The compensation range for this position is $80,000 - $117,700 annually. The specific compensation offered will be based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
