Overview
This position is responsible for the ongoing development, maintenance and management of the Health, Safety & Environmental function at the Vancouver site of Westport Fuel Systems. This role will also partner with both management and employees in the implementation and monitoring of all HSE programs with respect to BC legislation requirements.
Position Responsibilities
Health and Safety:
- Promote and maintain the focus on a positive and proactive health and safety culture while maintaining compliance with legal requirements
- Build programs, policies and procedures related to training, prevention, reporting and enforcement programs
- Support supervisors to inform workers of potential dangers in the workplace; assess risks, advise on precautionary measures and implement controls in consultation with management
- Schedule, conduct and coordinate training including (but not limited to); transportation of dangerous goods, WHMIS, flammable gases, hoisting and rigging, forklift training, fall arrest, hazard recognition and other health and safety and/or environmental related
- Investigate all incidents, perform root cause analyses, recommend and aid in the implementation of corrective actions and manage safety issue reporting
- Manage emergency response systems; run emergency drills and conduct fire and other safety inspections
- Manage Workers' Compensation claims and return to duty programs
- Manage relationships with contractors, suppliers and all operational teams to communicate the safety performance expectations on site
- Select and supply appropriate PPE to supervisors and workers
- Provide new hire orientation to employees
- Participation in the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC)
- Report against Health & Safety objectives and drive continuous improvements
Environmental Management Systems:
- Maintain and verify compliance to environmental legal requirements
- Manage environmental site issue reporting, investigation, and corrective actions
- Manage ISO14001:2015 auditing and certification
- Report against Environmental Management System objectives and drive continuous improvements
Position Requirements
- 3-5 years' experience in Health, Safety and EMS roles
- Post-secondary diploma or university degree in a recognized Occupational Health and Safety program or an equivalent combination of experience and training
- Experience implementing and auditing ISO14001:2015. Familiarity with other management systems is beneficial (ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, COR, ISO 45001/OHSAS 18000)
- Knowledge and competency in WorkSafe BC Regulations
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation or working towards meeting eligibility requirements preferred
- Experience with engineering/manufacturing/construction sectors with:
- Flammable gases
- High pressure gas and liquids
- Pressure vessels
- Cryogenic fluids
- Ability to establish credibility and engage, motivate and positively influence cultural and behavioural change in the workplace regarding safety
- Experience in leading incident investigations, performing cause analyses and preparing formal reports of findings and recommendations
- Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills
- Good problem solver with the ability to identify alternative solutions
- Quantitative analysis and interpretation skills
- Proficiency with MS Office suite
- Valid Occupational First Aid Level 2 or willingness to attain certification
