At Westport Fuel Systems, we are driving innovation to power a cleaner tomorrow. We are inventors, engineers, manufacturers and suppliers of advanced clean fuel systems and components that can change the way the world moves. Our products and technologies deliver performance, fuel efficiency and environmental benefits to address the challenges of global climate change and urban air quality. Headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, we serve our customers in more than 70 countries with leading global transportation brands.
Powerful trends in greenhouse gas ("GHG") emission reduction regulations have created a compelling opportunity for gaseous-fuel product solutions powered by natural gas, propane, renewable natural gas, and hydrogen. With our strategic partners, we are turning our business plan into reality. We share a common objective: to create clean transportation solutions that meet existing and future emissions regulations and targets for GHG reduction.
Overview
We are currently seeking a suitable candidate for Systems Analysis and Application Engineering role to join our Advanced Engineering (AE) team. The Advanced Engineering team is responsible for new technology development and/or improvement of existing technology/products starting with concept studies and progressing to designing, building, and testing of proof-of-concept working prototypes. The Advanced Engineering Team works closely with Product Engineering, Product Strategy, and Business Development teams to identify and prioritize key technologies that need to be further developed to meet the needs for future growth of the company. You will report to the Advanced Engineering Team Leader and play an important role in assessment of new ideas and concepts in the field of internal combustion engines, fuel systems, and alternative fuels / energy sources for both mobile and stationary applications. The candidate will be expected to participate in the selection and development of the best technical approach using analysis/simulation tools supported by testing of various engine combustion, fuel systems (both high pressure gaseous and cryogenic fuels) concepts as well as assessment of related emerging clean energy technology solutions.
Position Responsibilities
In this role, you will participate in the screening of new technologies and support generation of new concepts, as well as participate in technical analysis and further development of selected concepts (concept evaluation, proof-of-concept studies, system simulation and rig testing) to build these ideas into practical systems. This role will require working with other AE team members involved with modelling/simulation, design, and testing activities. You will also be expected assist with actual design and testing activities when necessary. The activities will include carrying out engineering feasibility studies and supporting prototype testing to select best possible technical approach. You will be expected to develop/utilize necessary physics based analytical models, simulation tools as part of the technical feasibility studies. The technical analysis and modelling will support development of new concepts related to engine combustion as well as gaseous/liquid and cryogenic systems. Responsibilities will include:
- Screening and technical assessment of technology concepts using systems level approach utilizing simple physics based analytical models as well simulation tools supported by requisite test data.
- Ability to understand key physical and engineering aspects of technology or system being assessed is critical in this role to develop necessary simple physics-based models.
- Application of systems approach to solving technical/engineering problems is also critical.
- Analyzing and optimizing energy/power/thermo-chemical systems using thermodynamics models.
- Support idea generation and refinement of novel technology concepts related to the field of internal combustion engines and clean fuels.
- Contribute as part of a project team working closely with analysis/modelling, design, and testing groups within the Advanced Engineering team as well as other technical teams within the company.
- Application engineering activities to convert a technical concept into a prototype design suitable for further testing. It will also require supporting development of test methodology and equipment for rigorous validation of selected technology concepts.
- Preparing and presenting technical reports as well as supporting other technology and product development activities.
Health & Safety responsibilities
- Promote Westport's H&S culture by leading by example in relation to Environmental, H&S policies and procedures and understand your obligations and responsibilities as it relates to applicable H&S Acts and Regulations
- Enforce Westport's H&S policies and procedures, encourage safe work practices, correct unsafe acts or conditions, conduct formal and informal workplace inspections
- Immediately respond to, investigate and take action from reports of unsafe conditions and/or behaviors
Position Requirements
- Relevant Engineering Degree (Master's or PhD degree in engineering preferred).
- Strong foundation in relevant engineering subjects in the field of Engineering Physics, Mechanical, Aerospace or Chemical Engineering.
- Experience in R&D/Technology Development in mechanical, aerospace, automotive or clean technology fields.
- Strong knowledge in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, combustion, internal combustion engines and chemical reaction systems.
- Exposure to electric hybrids powertrains, battery technology, fuel cells and other clean energy systems will be considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge and demonstrated capability for mathematical modelling of physical processes and problem solving.
- Good proficiency in using programming languages including C/C++, Python, MATLAB for coding and development of physics based analytical models.
- Interest and ability to generate and develop highly innovative new concepts is strongly desirable with a good engineering sense in identifying potential new intellectual property.
- Knowledge and experience with other simulations software for CFD, FEA or Thermo-Chemical Systems simulation would be an asset.
- Any experience in design, experimental work and data analysis would be an asset.
- Experience with cryogenic systems will be an asset.
- Self-motivated, capable of working on multiple projects with minimal supervision in a team environment.
- Excellent communication and report preparation skills.
