Vancouver, BC, March 7, 2017--(T-Net)--The second annual Life Sciences Startup Competition wrapped up after 11 new ventures recently pitched their startup idea to a full house at the Life Sciences Institute at the University of British Columbia.
Many patients can attest to the difficulty of remembering and noting down pain symptoms prior to a visit to a physician. Curos Labs, a pain management wearable that helps chronic pain sufferers track, analyze and report their symptoms, won first prize at the competition.
Andrew Booth, Chief Commercial Officer of STEMCELL Technologies, presented the award to the team.
Team Curos Labs Wins First Prize
The Life Sciences Startup Competition saw the 11 teams paired with an assigned mentor to work with each team.
“Being in an environment where we could improve our business plan through the feedback of our competition mentor, Rob Fuller, was invaluable. Presenting our pitch was ultimately an exceptional networking opportunity for our venture,” remarked Armin Rezaiean-Asel, co-founder of Curos Labs and UBC Computer Engineering student.
Curos Labs intends to use their prize money to complete their first hardware and software prototypes. Following this, they will begin to test their technology with patients in local clinics until completion of their go-to-market product.
In the two years of running the competition, the Life Sciences Institute and entrepreneurship@UBC have seen the increase in interest and caliber from life sciences researchers that are interested in translating their research ideas to market.

Third place winner was Tesseract Technologies, a venture developing a new material for treating brain aneurysms, using a soft bio-compatible polymer for treatment.

The Startup Competition seeks to create an avenue where researchers and students can strategize on bringing research to life. entrepreneurship@UBC will continue to work with the ventures through the Life Science Ventures Cohort, starting in March 2017.
