Science Fair Foundation BC announces outstanding achievements at this week's Canada-Wide Science Fair in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Vancouver, BC, May 29, 2017--(T-Net)--Sixty-five students from 13 regions throughout BC and the Yukon presented their projects in Regina, Saskatchewan this week at the Canada-Wide Science Fair - the highest level of Science Fair competition in Canada.
British Columbia and Yukon students brought home 106 awards and scholarships including 5 gold medals, 14 silver medals and 16 bronze medals!
Projects receiving top awards included “Microbial-film Power Generation 2.0? It's about to get cooler”, that demonstrated that the use of graphite plates in microbial film power generation can increase energy output by 37 times; “Why do Aspens Tremble? Adaptations for Self-Cleaning and Pest Control”, showing that the leaves of these monocultures of clones may have adaptations to prevent insect infestation; and “Amp Tree” harvesting electricity from living plants from the pH differential with the soil. These projects are just some of the innovative projects that showcased our youths' curiosity and concern for the environment.
Joining hundreds of the country's brightest young scientific minds, BC and Yukon students competed for medals, cash awards, scholarships and other prizes. Participating in three categories - junior, intermediate and senior based on school grades 7 to 12, BC and Yukon students received 17 Special Awards and 54 Scholarships for a total of $111,750.
Over 1,000 student finalists, delegates and judges participated in the 56th Canada-Wide Science Fair hosted by The University of Regina and Youth Science Canada.
