City of Vancouver Says Renewable Energy coming to Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver

Vancouver, BC, April 2, 2019--(T-Net)--The City of Vancouver says it began construction on March 23 as part of the second phase of improvements along Quebec St - work that includes an expansion of the "Neighbourhood Energy Utility" (NEU) to buildings in the Mount Pleasant area later this year.
Expansion of the Neighbourhood Energy Utility
As the first utility of its kind in North America, the NEU captures waste thermal energy from sewage to provide low-carbon space heating and hot water to buildings in the Southeast False Creek and Great Northern Way neighbourhoods.
The utility began operations in 2010 and since then has rapidly expanded to serve approximately 5.4 million square feet of residential, commercial, and institutional space.
The upcoming expansion involves the installation of NEU distribution pipe along a segment of Quebec St from south of 1st to 3rd avenues to extend service to buildings in the Mount Pleasant area for late 2019.
Over the long term, the green technology used by the NEU is anticipated to provide renewable energy to more than 22 million square feet of buildings in the False Creek Area, including False Creek Flats and Northeast False Creek.

Building on phase one of this work, the streets will be rebuilt to improve comfort and safety for all modes of travel.

Construction along Quebec St will begin south of 1st Ave and progress south towards 3rd Ave. Traffic impacts include a full northbound closure of Quebec St from 1st to 3rd avenues including the bike lane. Road users are encouraged to plan ahead online or connecting on the go through VanConnect.
