Vancouver-based CleanTech Company Mangrove Water Technologies Receives $2.1 Million Investment from SDTC
Friday, May 24, 2019
Vancouver, BC, May 24, 2019--(T-Net)--The Government of Canada announced today an investment of $2.1 million in Vancouver-based CleanTech company Mangrove Water Technologies through its Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) initiative.
Funding for Mangrove Water Technologies will support its zero discharge desalination technology, which will reduce the environmental impact of oil and gas sector operations.
Mangrove's innovation treats saline wastewater and converts the salts into value-added chemicals such as hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide that can be used on-site.
This technology helps oil and gas producers reduce costs and water usage, resulting in cleaner air and water over the long term. It will also help to maintain three jobs and create up to ten additional jobs.
This project received funding and support from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), which helps Canadian entrepreneurs accelerate the development and deployment of globally competitive clean technology solutions.
"By converting waste gas and saline water to high value chemicals, Mangrove's modular solution will have a meaningful impact in making Canada's oil and gas sector more sustainable for the future. SDTC's support for companies creating sustainable solutions is making a real difference in driving Canada's environmental and economic prosperity." said Zoe Kolbuc, Vice-President, Partnerships, SDTC.
Saad Dara, co-founder and CEO, Mangrove Water Technologies Ltd
"Mangrove has developed a distributed manufacturing platform that converts waste streams to chemicals on-site & on-demand and water for reuse. This not only simplifies logistics and reduces cost but also has significant environmental benefits around GHG reduction and water conservation. This SDTC investment will help to accelerate commercialization with our customer and project partner Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. through an in-field demonstration of a fully integrated 100m3 system at their mining site in Alberta. This system will also serve as the commercial building block to access other industrial applications beyond oil & gas. We are very excited by this announcement and the support from the Federal Government." said Saad Dara, co-founder and CEO, Mangrove Water Technologies Ltd.
Quick facts
About Mangrove Water Technologies
Mangrove Water Technologies is developing a technology that simultaneously converts saline waste-water and waste-gases into desalinated water and value-added chemicals for on-site utilization. The technology is modular and mobile and is currently being demonstrated at the commercial scale. We have advanced the technology from a concept at the lab scale to a field pilot over the last four years. The technology was developed in the Wilkinson research group at the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia with funding through Emissions Reduction Alberta, Western Economic Diversification and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
