Tech Industry Leaders Warn Trudeau Government's New Capital-Gains Tax Increases in Budget 2024 Will Stymie Entrepreneurship (Globe and Mail)
Vancouver, BC, April 18, 2024--Ottawa's increase to capital-gains taxes will have a chilling effect on the innovation economy and impede investment and risk-taking, technology industry leaders said after the release of the federal budget this week. The changes, they said, could discourage founders and tech workers from starting companies in Canada and deter venture funding by reducing the profits that investors can earn. "The tech industry is viewing this budget as hostile," Benjamin Bergen, president of the Council of Canadian Innovators, a technology industry group, said in an interview.

Former Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau Slams Freeland's 2024 Budget as a Threat to Investment, Economic Growth (CBC News)
Vancouver, BC, April 18, 2024--Former Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau says there was talk of increasing the capital gains tax when he was on the job — but he resisted such a change because he feared it would discourage investment by companies and job creators. He said Canada can expect that investment drought now, in response to a federal budget that targets high-end capital gains for a tax hike. "This was very clearly something that, while I was there, we resisted. We resisted it for a very specific reason — we were concerned about the growth of the country," he said.
