SFU to Lead New National Infectious Disease Modeling Network

Burnaby, BC, April 15, 2021--Simon Fraser University mathematics professor Caroline Colijn will lead a new, national infectious disease modeling network that will inform decisions related to public health threats and better prepare Canada for future pandemics. Colijn will oversee the Canadian Network for Modelling Infectious Disease (CANMOD), supported by $2.5 million in funding over the next two years.

Sensing 'Robot Healthcare Helpers' Being Developed at SFU

Who knows, maybe a medical robot can prescribe your medicine someday? That's the idea behind 3D structural-sensing robots being developed and tested at Simon Fraser University by Woo Soo Kim, associate professor in the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering.

SFU Researchers Developing Neural Network A.I. System to Protect Killer Whales

Burnaby, BC, December 24, 2020--Ruth Joy, a statistical ecologist and lecturer in SFU's School of Environmental Science, is leading a project that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to classify whale calls. The ultimate goal of the neural network project is to develop a warning system to help protect endangered southern resident killer whales from potentially fatal ship strikes.

SFU Study: Mask Mandates Shown to Significantly Reduce Spread of Covid-19

Burnaby, BC, October 23, 2020--A new study by Simon Fraser University (SFU) researchers has found clear evidence that wearing a mask can have a significant impact on the spread of COVID-19.The researchers, from SFU's Department of Economics, have determined that mask mandates are associated with a 25 per cent or larger weekly reduction in COVID-19 cases.
