Vancouver, BC, October 27, 2011--(T-Net)--Today, Digital Payment Technologies (DPT) announced the deployment of its LUKE multi-space parking pay stations in the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The pay stations are managed by Republic Parking System and are part of the city's “Park Cedar Rapids” (www.parkcedarrapids.com) initiative. This initiative was developed to fund downtown improvements with parking revenues, make parking more convenient and improve the overall experience for the city's residents and visitors.
In 2008, floodwaters destroyed much of downtown Cedar Rapids, including most of the city's single-head mechanical parking meters. As the city began the long process of rebuilding, they contracted with Republic Parking to manage the city's parking assets. Republic recommended that they not only replace the damaged parking meters, but install multi-space parking pay stations for better flexibility and reporting, as well as improved aesthetics on the street. 350 single-space meters have been replaced by 40 new Pay-by-Space networked multi-space pay stations; approximately one per block, per side of the street.
Consumers now have the added benefit of multiple payment options via the acceptance of coins, debit and credit cards, and have the added convenience of extending their parking session at any pay station in the downtown core. The city also plans to enable consumers to pay directly from their cell phones starting in early December 2011.
“The consumer reaction to the new DPT pay stations has been very positive,” said Jon Rouse, general manager of Cedar Rapids Parking. “Not only are they more intuitive and aesthetically-pleasing, but the ability to pay by credit or debit card is proving to be especially valuable to consumers. We are already seeing card payments outpace the use of coins.”
Added Alan Menezes, vice president of marketing and product management for Digital Payment Technologies, “We are honored to have played such an important role in the revitalization of the Cedar Rapids Downtown District. The city and the Downtown District are prime examples of how cities across North America can leverage their parking assets and reinvest the parking revenues back into the community.”
