Vancouver, BC, October 22, 2012--(T-Net)--HR Tech Group has released its 2012 High Tech Salary Survey, the leading tech salary survey for BC for more than 20 years, which showed an average technology wage increase in 2012 of 2.5%, slightly down from 2.8% last year. Executives received an average increase of 2.1% to their base salary in 2012 - somewhat similar to the level of increase provided last year, demonstrating consistent steady growth of the industry.
The 2012 survey includes data on more than 8,700 tech workers from more than 70 of the largest tech companies in the province.
Entry level Software Systems Developers start at an average of $51,000/year; while Intermediate Software Systems Developers earn $79,400 /year; and very senior specialist developers were reported to be earning a base salary of $96,400/year.
As is typical, although most technology workers received increases, many executives did not get an increase to their base pay. In fact, 25% of BC tech companies that reported giving some base salary adjustment to employees, did not give anything to their executives. (This compares with 9% nationally). Executives typically had a high base salary, along with various bonus and long term incentives. The executive base salary average varies based on the size of the business including revenue, number of employees and tech sector.
Compared to national data in Towers Watson's 2012 Salary Budget Survey, the BC tech sector's average increases were slightly lower than increases provided nationally, While BC tech companies averaged 2.5% increases this year, nationally companies gave closer to 3.0% increases.
Salary forecasts for next year look encouraging, with the average forecast at 2.9% for base salary adjustments.
Survey scope: Data is analyzed by number of employees, revenue and sector. Half of the companies represented have up to 100 employees, and 22% have more than 250 employees. 40% of the participants had revenue between $15M and $50M, with 38% under $15M and 22% over $50M. Just over a third of responding companies work in the IT (software) sector, with the remainder companies representing digital media, clean tech, and communications sectors.
