Why the Company Built Buddybuild (in the Company's Own Words)
The birth of buddybuild
Upon founding buddybuild, we wrote a small document that outlined our vision of success. Below is a snippet from that very document:
On-boarding and building an app should be frictionless - no need to setup any scripts or special build files; no need to tell us the details of build configurations, schemes, which cocoapods or carthage dependencies to install. Buddybuild will figure it all out automatically within seconds of selecting a repo to build.
Distribution should be as simple as sending an email - buddybuild will manage the craziness and alleviate the confusion of iOS signing certificates and provisioning profiles. The beta tester experience is as simple as clicking a link in an email and downloading the app... even if they're not in a provisioning profile.
Make it incredibly easy and intuitive for users to send feedback - simply take a screenshot to share any feedback right within your app. Receive graphically annotated screenshots, feedback notes and device metadata. That said, feedback comes in many forms... including crashes. Along with the stacktraces that you're used to digging through, we'll show you whose device crashed, and the trace back to the exact offending lines of source code that caused the crash.
Play well with others - buddybuild will sit in an ecosystem of other development tools. Integrations are critical in maintaining an efficient development workflow. Buddybuild integrates with App and Play Stores, bug trackers (JIRA, Pivotal Tracker, GitHub Issues + more), communication tools (Slack, HipChat), and other app distribution solutions (TestFlight / iTunes Connect and HockeyApp).
Maintenance is a problem best handled by someone else - mobile platforms and operating systems shift quickly. Downloading, installing, and testing your app for each version of Xcode (as an example) is an incredibly ineffective use of development time. To give you early insight to any changes that might break your app, buddybuild will automatically take the most recent successful build, run it against the newest version of Xcode and email you the results of any potential breaking changes (a feature we call Xcode preview).
Most importantly: all of this should be possible by simply picking a repo and tweaking a few settings.
No need to handcraft scripts or configure complicated workflows.
It should feel like magic.
Building software is both a science and an art. For those who want to know how the ‘magic' works, you'll have the ability to drop into the details. For those who want it to ‘just work', we'll remove the unnecessary complexity required to perform these tedious tasks. We'll give you back the time you'd spend writing scripts to focus on working on your app.
Either way, we hope you'll enjoy the time and effort we've placed in handcrafting every pixel on your screen.
We're a group of ambitious malcontents who are dissatisfied with the status-quo; constantly aware of the potential for improvement. We have a strong desire to help technology play a more meaningful role in developers lives, and to that end, we'll also be striving to improve your experience day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by month. If you're ever frustrated with buddybuild, I urge you to let us know - we'll make it right.
We genuinely care about your experience - if buddybuild doesn't feel magical to you or if it takes you longer to get started than it takes to order coffee, then the next one is on us.
