Building a profitable software business is hard. It's so hard that only around 50% of startups remain in play beyond five years. Uncontrollable factors like luck and timing often play a role in a startup's success. But your execution is what ultimately determines progress, and we often derive our work practices and processes from popular conventions.
Advertised usually under the guise of "best practices", these conventions have been traditionally accepted as mantras that can accelerate your growth. And on the face, they appear perfectly legit and reasonable. But applied without care, these guidelines can hinder your progress more than help.
In this talk, we will explore some startup rules in vogue today, like the ones listed below, and why we need to look beyond them for success:
- A great idea attracts customers automatically
- People are the most crucial element of Startup success
- Speed to market is more important than stability
