Moving beyond definitions of different kinds of bias, this session is designed to help you identify your own biases through a series of interactive exercises. This in turn helps us identify biases that might be shaping our workplace. We will identify specific strategies for minimizing or combatting them.
We've partnered with Leah Shumka, Manager of Sexualized Violence Education, Prevention and Support at the faculty of Equity and Human Rights, UVic to explore the issues in an interactive format with actionable next steps.
Companies should be working to create more diversity, equity and inclusion within and outside of their organization. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it makes clear business sense. New research is proving companies with more diverse workforces in gender, race and ethnicity perform better financially. Companies in the top quartile for gender diversity outperform their competitors by 15% and those in the top quartile for ethnic diversity outperform their competitors by 35%.
We know that inclusive workplaces foster positive cultures that minimize bias and recognize and address systemic inequities so that no one is disadvantaged. Hiring with these goals in mind is a great place to start. We also know it takes learning and intentional effort to achieve this. Thanks for your commitment to learning!

The Victoria Advanced Technology Council (VIATeC) is the conduit that connects people, knowledge and resources to grow a successful technology sector in Greater Victoria.
Since VIATeC's inception way back in 1989, the Greater Victoria tech sector has grown to over 800 known technology companies, employing more than 13,000 people and generating in excess of $1.95 billion in annual revenues with an economic impact of $2.65 billion. That's bigger than the revenues generated by the entire NHL and explains why the advanced technology is Greater Victoria's #1 private industry.
VIATeC is intended to be the first place that people contact for information or assistance related to advanced technology in Greater Victoria. VIATeC's membership, which currently stands at over 350 annually elects VIATeC's Board of Directors, which in turn provides guidance to the Executive Director.
